2/25/2012: ANNE WILSON

Anne Wilson’s new movement performance will be staged February 25, 2012, from 1-5 pm at The Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, England. Working with composer Shawn Decker, 18 dancers from the Lowry’s Centre for Advanced Training, and textile students from Manchester Metropolitan University, Wilson choreographed accumulations of repetitive movements relating to the weaving process. The interaction of bodies in space metaphorically becomes both a textile and a soft machine, responding to the absence of actual textile production in NW England at this time.
The Whitworth will also present Wilson’s "Local Industry Cloth" and projections of 2 past movement performances (Chicago and Houston). A selection of 1st millennium Egyptian cloth fragments, curated by Wilson from the museum’s extensive collection of world textiles, frames her new projects historically.
Wilson’s work is part of the larger exhibition entitled “Cotton: Global Threads” (February 11 – May 13, 2012) which includes projects by 6 other artists: Yinka Shonibare MBE, Lubaina Himid, Abdoulaye Konaté, Aboubakar Fofana, Grace Ndiritu, and Liz Rideal.

4/9/2009: BRIAN ULRICH

Brian Ulrich is awarded a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography! Ulrich will be taking advantage of this award to continue his Copia project which will culminate in a ten year photographic project which addresses one of our biggest challenges at the dawn of the 21st century; our relationship to our consumption and the potential reassessing of its role as purpose in our lives. Edward Hirsch, the president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, announced today that in its eighty-fifth annual competition for the United States and Canada the Foundation has awarded 180 Fellowships to artists, scientists, and scholars. The successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants. Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of stellar achievement and exceptional promise for continued accomplishment. One of the hallmarks of the Guggenheim Fellowship program is the diversity of its Fellows. The ages of this year’s Fellows range from twenty-nine to seventy; their residences span the world, from Waipahu, Hawaii, to New York City and from Toronto to Glasgow; and their Fellowship projects will carry them to every continent. In all, sixty-two disciplines and sixty-eight different academic institutions are represented by this year’s Fellows.
