Rhona Hoffman Gallery is pleased to present “SERGIO VIEIRA DE MELLO: RALLY PARIS-DARFUR” by New Catalogue, a collaborative between artists Luke Batten and Jonathan Sadler. In their first solo exhibition at the gallery, New Catalogue creates a showroom for an off-road motorcycle rally from Paris to Darfur, a re-imagination of the Paris to Dakar Rally.
The proposed event was inspired by the artists’ desire to create a memorial to Sergio Vieira de Mello, a well known and widely respected Brazilian United Nations diplomat who was killed by a car bomb at the UN headquarters in the Canal Hotel in Baghdad in 2003.
“SERGIO VIEIRA DE MELLO: RALLY PARIS-DARFUR” includes large-scale paintings, intricately designed vinyl decals, promotional posters and a redesigned KTM 950 Super Enduro motorcycle. These works together specify a dynamic approach to a memorial while simultaneously calling attention to the urgency and complexity of international diplomacy.
This exhibition exemplifies New Catalogue’s practice of exploring narratives and history by creating work that mirrors stock photography and design.
